The Competition

The Solar Decathlon is a bi-annual competition that challenges 20 universities from around the world to design and build solar powered homes. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in partnership with its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). In September of 2011, each school will transport their home to one location (to be determined) where it will be judged on its performance in 10 categories: architecture, market appeal, engineering, communications, affordability, comfort zone, hot water, appliances, home entertainment, and energy balance. Open to the public, the event attracts over 100,000 visitors as well as national media attention.
